Number of cyclists in Helsinki

There are two datasets available on cycling in Helsinki: hourly and annual

Hourly dataset:

Helsinki cyclist counts per hour from the beginning of 2014. The number of cyclists is calculated automatically at 16 different counting points. The coordinates of the counters are indicative (coordinate system ETRS-GK25).

In the 2016 data, both sides of the Kulosaari bridge are combined in the Kulosaaren silta et. column.

There have been interruptions in data collection at the following points:

Kaisaniemi 19.12.2021–30.6.2022

Kulosaaren silta pohjoispuoli 14.3.2022–30.6.2022

Munkkiniemi silta eteläpuoli 18.5.2022–30.6.2022

Ratapihantie 19.7.–15.9.2022

Lauttasaaren silta etelä- ja pohjoispuoli 30.6.–9.7.2022 and from 20.9.2022 onwards

The dataset is updated twice a year.

Annual dataset:

This dataset contains results from sample-based bicycle traffic counts conducted in Helsinki from 2016 onwards. Most of the counts have been conducted manually on a weekday during the first half of June between 7:00 and 19:00. Some counts have been carried out at other times using different methods.

Some locations are monitored regularly, while others are counted as needed. Automatic counting stations have been used to scale up short-term manual counts. If a location has multiple counts in a year, each count is shown as a separate entry in the data.

The data coverage may vary between locations and years. Missing values are marked as NULL.

Attribute explanations (annual dataset):

Vuosi: The year the count was conducted

Paikka: The location of the counting point (address or other description)

Laskenta: Number of cyclists during the counting period. Typically conducted on weekdays in June between 7:00 and 19:00, unless otherwise noted

Vuorokausi: Estimated total for the full 24-hour day, based on coefficients derived from automatic counting points

Kesäkuun arkipäivä ka: Average number of cyclists during weekdays (Mon–Fri, excluding Midsummer week) in June, calculated using coefficients from automatic counters

Huippuvrk: Estimated traffic volume for a peak weekday with good weather. Based on the average of the five highest weekday counts from May to August using automatic counters

Lisätieto: Any additional notes regarding the count result

Päivämäärä: The date when the count was conducted

Pisteluokka: Classification of the counting point: Niemenraja (city boundary), kantakaupunginraja (inner city boundary), muu vakiopiste (other regular point), or laskentatoivepiste (on-demand point). All except "laskentatoivepiste" are monitored regularly
